Additional Details
St. Peter’s at the Cross, which is the Guild Church of the City, was founded on the site of the Roman Prætorium by Æthelfleda of Mercia in 907 and until the eighteenth century had attached to it a structure called the Pentice, where many City functions took place. It was and still technically remains the Parish Church of the (Lord) Mayor and Corporation. Twice yearly the Guilds of Chester come to St. Peter’s in procession from the Guildhall and in the presence of the Lord Mayor renew their commitment before God, to preserving the City and the Guilds. Today, St. Peter’s is also home to the Ecumenical Centre where people of different Christian Denominations meet. (Tea, Coffee, Soft Drinks, Cakes and sandwiches are available together with a book stall).
